Sheffield TUC stands in silence today to remember HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY

PRESS RELEASE Tuesday 26th January 2021

Join Stand Up to Racism for Holocaust Memorial Day Online Event ‘Never Again’

6pm tonight

Sheffield TUC joins millions of others in the trade union movement in remembering the shocking truth of the Nazi Holocaust today.

“It is the time to remember and grieve for the 6 Million Jews who were murdered on an industrial scale by the fascist Nazi state in pursuit of its “final solution” – the eradication of an entire race – 80 years ago” said Martin Mayer Secretary Sheffield TUC.

“We must never forget. But we must also learn the lessons of history” said Martin Mayer. “Too many people stood by or looked the other way then: we must not let that happen again when racists and fascists peddle their race hatred today and in the future.”

Nothing on the scale of the Nazi Holocaust has ever happened since but genocide has been practised in recent times e.g.  Cambodia and Rwanda, plus the horrors of Srebrenica, and ethnic cleansing of the Yazidis by Isis and the Rohingya Muslims in Burma. These are not the only examples either.

“Holocaust Memorial Day is therefore an important reminder of the ultimate dangers of racism and fascism and what can happen if we look away and let race hatred take its murderous course.”

“Workers should join us to stand up for justice, whatever the issues” said Martin Mayer “Join a trade union today!” Any workers who want to discuss how to do this and get help organising should get in touch with Sheffield TUC in the first instance by emailing or sending a message on our Sheffield TUC Facebook Page
