Why join?
Trade Unions are organised groups or workers who come together to support each other in the workplace, negotiating with employers to improve pay, terms and conditions and to ensure fair and equal treatment. Unions provide members with individual advice and representation, and many also offer their members opportunities for personal and professional development. For more benefits that unions can bring, take a look at the Trade Union Congress report ‘The Union Advantage’.
Legal Right
Everyone has the legal right to join a trade union if they want to and you cannot be disadvantaged in anyway at work simply for being a trade union member. There may well be a union in your workplace. If so, talk to the union rep and get advice on how to join up.It’s always best to join the union that’s already established where you work. They may have an official recognition deal with your employer, which gives them more rights to represent you, or even if they don’t, there’s a lot to be said for being in a larger grouping of members. Sheffield Trades Union Council brings together unions to work and campaign around issues affecting working people in their local workplaces and communities.
Sheffield Trades Union Council aims to:
• Raise public awareness of the rights at work and the union role in enforcing those rights.
• Promote organising and recruitment drives to build union membership.
• Support union and community campaigns for dignity and respect in the workplace and beyond.
