Wed 12th Oct Climate Justice Coalition
6.30pm Organising for COP 27 12th November
We shall hold a regional day of action in Sheffield on the 12th November 2022, along with other major cities up and down the country. So far nationally action will take place in London, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Birmingham, Plymouth and Sheffield.
Yorkshire and Humberside Climate Justice Coalition will be hosting the day alongside us, bringing people from Leeds, Wakefield, York and other areas. into Sheffield on the day.
We now have to act quickly (we have less than 6 weeks to build this event) and so are reaching out to all climate, trade union, community, faith, youth, and anti-racist groups – everyone – to join us by attending our next organising meeting in order to organise around the day of action in Sheffield. We need mass mobilisations across Britain on November the 12th because this crisis demands action on a local, national and global level.
The meeting details are: South Yorkshire Climate Justice Coalition – COP27 Org Mtg

How Can We Stop the Racist Offensive? In the wake of the horror of the French, Swedish and Italian elections, and with the number of tragic deaths we have seen in the Channel, it is outrageous that Braverman celebrated the role of the French border forces and their role in enacting the dangerous racist hostile environment and Fortress Europe. This conference aims to bring all those fighting institutional racism, police racism, Islamophobia, Antisemitism, the rise of the far right, for refugee rights – people fighting racism in all its forms – together into one room to move forward as one united mass movement against racism that can win real change.
Confirmed speakers so far include: Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP: Dawn Butler MP; Eddie Dempsey RMT assistant general secretary; Shami Chakrabarti human rights activist: Francesco Galleri Italian antifascist, 6000 Sardines; Cas Mudde Political scientist and author of The Far Right Today; Birdgirl (Dr. Mya-Rose Craig) ornithologist and climate activist; Elise Bryant Award-winning US Author; Clare Moseley founder of Care4Calais; Mohammed Kozbar chair of Finsbury Park Mosque; Paula Peters Disabled People Against Cuts; Mohammad Asif Afghan Human Rights Foundation; Fiona Sim Justice for Sim Family

“Charged – How the Police Try to Suppress Protest” by Matt Foot and Morag Livingstone (Verso 2022) With activists and authors
Mark Seddon writes: “I’m one of the organisers of Sheffield Transformed, which is a group of socialists and trade unionists who host events on political education and culture. We are co-hosting an event on Tuesday 18th October with the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign that I think local trade unionists would find very interesting. We’ve invited the authors of the book ‘Charged: How the Charged – How the Police Try to Suppress Protest’ for a discussion and reading.
The authors, Matt Foot and Morag Livingstone, will explain how, over many years, UK governments have empowered the police to use violent tactics against protestors and trade unionists. People can find more information and book their place at: https://buytickets.at/sheffieldtransformed/770258
Tickets are free but any donations received will go to the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign. Please do circulate this among your local trades councils and networks.
If you’d like more information or have any questions please do get in touch.
Thanks. All the best, Mark”

Wednesday 9th November Launch event for Community Action magazine
6-8pm, in the Diamond building at the Uni of Sheffield.
“A launch for an online archive we’ve been creating (and will shortly finish!) for Community Action magazine. Published from 1972-1990 the magazine documents a range of community-led, place-based activism and campaigning in the UK, including but not limited to: tenant organising, opposition to slum clearance, alternative plans, advice centres, the women’s movement, workplace activism, disability rights and community transport.
Links and overlaps with the labour movement were unsurprisingly absolutely key, which is why it would be great if the Trades Council could contribute. The idea is for a round table event, starting with some background to the magazine and bringing some former editors (Dexter Whitfield, David Hall and hopefully another) into discussion with contemporary activists, ending with a Q&A.”
Jason Slade, Lecturer, Department of Urban Studies and Planning, University of Sheffield.

The national Climate Justice Coalition has been in contact with our allies in Egypt and across
the region, who are now calling for a Global Day of Action during COP27. It is once again going to be critical to bring Climate Justice to the fore in this moment, underlining the links between climate and the cost-of-living catastrophe, and to continue building active solidarity across our movements locally, nationally and internationally around:

Saltley Gate to Partygate! Songs, stories and videos that connects a key trade union victory of the past to the major class conflicts of today.
“All you could hear was close the gates, close the gates, close the gates, on and on and on” Don Perrygrove, car worker (The Battle of Saltley Gate)
“I am receiving £11.49 an hour. They’re paying more than £18 an hour to the agency drivers to break this strike. It’s not fair!” Teressa, driver (Coventry Bin Strike)
Weaving song, music and video Banner celebrates the 50th anniversary of the labour movement victory of Saltley Gate, when 20,000 union workers walked out to support striking miners. In a massive show of solidarity, they blockaded and shut down the coke depot in Saltley and helped the miners win a 30% pay rise!
As the cost of living crisis deepens and right-wing governments across the world pass ever more draconian legislation to protect the interests and profits of the rich and powerful, people are fighting back. We tell the inspirational stories of striking bin workers in Coventry, the direct action of Black Lives Matter and Kill the Bill activists, as well as the campaigns to save our NHS and the massively successful farmers’ strike in India.
