Tuesday 28th April International Workers memorial Day
1230hrs by the Memorial Tree outside Sheffield Town Hall, Pinstone Street.
Sheffield TUC will hold a wreath laying ceremony with speeches outside Sheffield Town Hall by the Memorial Tree. Branches and other organisation are invited to lay a wreath.
So florists for IWMD wreaths: Townsend – 0114 254 4477 and FLOURISH – 0114 266 6263. They both would deliver. We used Townsend, Gleadless for several years but they were closed last year, hence Flourish. Up to you!
This is an international trade union event to mark the importance of health and safety at work. The TUC says “Every year more people are killed at work than in wars. Most don’t die of mystery ailments, or in tragic “accidents”. They die because an employer decided their safety just wasn’t that important a priority. International Workers Memorial Day (IWMD) 28 April commemorates those workers.”

As part of our annual May Day celebrations, Sheffield TUC is pleased to announce the launch of a new pamphlet commemorating Sheffield’s – and Sheffield Trades Union Council’s – involvement in the General Strike of 1926. Whether organising a Central Disputes Committee that sat in continuous session to oversee the strike, organising permits for transport workers to move essential goods, or mediating between different unions, the authorities and the national TUC, our Trades Council was at the heart of the action.
The pamphlet is being produced by archivist and local historian, Edd Mustill, author of a new centenary history, Britain’s Revolutionary Summer: The General Strike of 1926, and the pamphlet, The Sheffield Workers’ Committee: Rank and file trade unionism during the First World War.
At the launch event, Edd will provide an overview of the pamphlet and lead a discussion on this pivotal moment in Sheffield labour movement history.
Tea and coffee will be provided.
Saturday May 16th. The National Nakba day march in London.
Nakba Day march is one of the most important days in the Palestinian calendar in the fight for freedom, justice and liberation. Palestine Solidarity campaign and partner organisations are calling for it to be the biggest yet, in the face of unprecedented attempts by the Government to shut down our movement.
If you can’t go to London, there will be our usual Nakba Vigil outside the Town Hall at 12 noon In the face of the outrageous criminal convictions of PSC Director and Stop the War Deputy Director, the continuing arrests for standing against the proscription of Palestine Action and, most importantly, the continuing support by the UK Govt, for Israel’s genocidal Government, we must make this March bigger than ever!
