Thursday 21st May Welfare not Warfare – oppose Trump’s Wars
7pm Showroom cinema Room 5 Speaker: Steve bell, Nat Treasurer Stop the War Coalition. Organised by Stop the War.
“I fear the world is not sleepwalking into a wider war. I fear it is doing so with its eyes wide open.” Antonia Guterres 2023
The world is becoming ever more unstable. It is not only the US-Israeli war in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran but also Trump’s tightening embargo on Cuba and the EU and Britain fuelling the war in Ukraine. As the USA loses its economic dominance to China, it is choosing to use its uncontested military superiority to maintain its global dominance. In December, NATO countries, including the UK, were bullied into increasing their military expenditure to 5% of their GDP. War fever is being fed by pro-military pressure groups to put the drive for armaments expenditure before welfare.
These developments are taking place in the context of a climate crisis and the looming threat of a severe economic recession. Wars and arms expenditure are a disaster for the planet, its climate and its inhabitants. But if we are to oppose them, we need to campaign for political alternatives. Join the Stop the War Coalition and come to the meeting.

ORGREAVE INQUIRY CALL FOR EVIDENCE
After many years of steadfast and determined campaigning the Orgreave Public Inquiry has been formally launched by the Government. We have produced a leaflet explaining how people can contribute. Please contribute to the inquiry and circulate this information far and wide. Please print it off if you can to give to people who don’t use computers and smartphones. We need this to be an Inquiry with the voices of miners, their families and supporters during the strike at the forefront. The deadline for people to submit evidence is very soon – 22nd May 2026. We can also post you some hard copies if you wish. Please email: orgreavejustice@hotmail.com with a name, postal address and the number of copies you need. We now need to make sure the inquiry delivers the truth and justice so long overdue. Thank you.
Monday 15th June Better Buses South Yorkshire
Our next BBSY campaign meeting will be on Monday 15th June. More details to follow. We have been offered a stall at the Sharrow Festival on 4th July. Please let me know if you can help with this (I am away that weekend but can get materials to you if needed).
The survey from SYMCA on priorities for bus improvements ends next Sunday, 17th May. It has not been well publicised (their reason is the local elections) – we have suggested they extend the deadline and advertise it more intensively to encourage responses. I’m sure many of you will have already responded, but if you haven’t, please do so.

Friday 10th July Eve of Miners Gala public meeting on history
6pm – 7.30pm Durham City Methodist Church, 8 Old Elvet, Durham, DH1 3HL
Rise will be at Durham Miners’ Gala and on the eve of the Gala, we’re
hosting an essential conversation about the past, present and future of
working-class struggle.
The political, economic & social period we’re living through is
overwhelming. It’s hard to know where to begin. How do we build power?
How do we challenge the conditions shaping our lives and communities?
We’re bringing together voices from historic struggles including those
involved in the 1984–85 Miners’ Strike alongside organisers of working
class struggle today. We’ll explore the lessons of the past and how we
use that wisdom to win now.
Speaker details coming soon.
