75 Mines. 3 Sisters. 1 Cause. (And a six-pack of Babycham)
2024 is the fortieth anniversary of the 1984/85 miners’ strike, a dispute that still resonates today. But the strike wasn’t just about pickets vs police – in this hard-hitting musical comedy there are no miners and no cops. Instead, we follow the fortunes of three sisters in a pit village, hit hard by the Government’s war against the miners and determined to set up a branch of ‘Women Against Pit Closures’.
Early 1984, and Olive, Mary and Isabel are sisters whose everyday squabbles collide with a strike that forces them to question their lives, their relationships and their family ties.
This strike wasn’t just a war fought on the battlegrounds of picket line, Parliament and public opinion. It was as much a battle in the homes and families of those fighting for their communities.
We’re Not Going Back tackles the resilience of working communities, the make-and-mend fabric of family and the power of sticking two fingers up to a government hell-bent on destruction… and all with humour, song and a six pack of Babycham.
Saturday 9th March Emergency Day of Action for NHS
Organised by Keep Our NHS Public
The latest statistics released this week show the NHS in severe crisis. We must ACT NOW.
Shocking new statistics released by NHS England, show nearly 35,000 patients a month waited for 12 hours for a hospital bed in 2023. More than 3,000 times higher than in 2011.
This led to up to 500 people were dying every week to due unnecessary and avoidable delays. Thousands of families grieving, thousands of communities reeling. The gravity of the situation can’t be denied and speaks to intentional and wilful neglect under this Conservative Government. Sadly, both main political parties offer the same old analysis, ‘The NHS is broken model and a ‘funding black hole’ that needs urgent reform.’ And the same old “solution”: more NHS privatisation.
Labour Shadow Health Secretary, Wes Streeting makes no bones about this either saying, ‘Labour would hold the door open for the private sector in the NHS’. We can’t accept this level of suffering – and neither can we accept the narrative pushed by the main political parties. We’re clear that the NHS isn’t failing the public. The government is failing the NHS.
It’s time to hit the streets.
EMERGENCY DAY OF ACTION SATURDAY 9 MARCH
We’re calling on all our local groups and activists, whether you’re a KONP member or just a supporter who cares about our NHS, to join an event near you.

The name of your local group / The contact details of the main organiser / The time, date, and location of your action
Your action can be a street stall, or an even march through your local town. There are experienced KONP activists all around the country who will know what’s achievable in their area.

Saturday 9th March Sheffield CSC AGM
Upstairs in The Old Queen’s Head. Following a brief business meeting we’ll be showing the documentary film, Cuba and Chernobyl. As you might remember Cuba’s response to the nuclear disaster was to treat 26,000 victims, treating them continuously over two decades. A perfect example of Cuba’s internationalism, which continues around the world today. Most recently in Italy where a chronic shortage of doctors exists. A discussion will follow the film.

The campaign to Save UK Steel
Decades of underinvestment have run down our steel industry. However, politicians can reverse this if they choose. UNITE has developed an ambitious Workers’ Plan for Steel which would make the UK a world leader in green steel, bringing jobs and prosperity back to all our steel towns. We’ll be in Stocksbridge over the next few weeks, speaking to everyone in the community and organising a local campaign. We look forward to meeting you soon.

Tuesday 26th March Lift the Ban Community Study Day
Community Study Day at Sheffield University: “Working rights for people in the asylum system”, hosted by Migration Research Group and the Lift the Ban Coalition
“This community study day is for anyone who wants to learn more about and discuss issues around asylum and the right to work. It aims to share knowledge from different perspectives, from people who are themselves awaiting a decision on their asylum application to NGOs, trade unions, politicians, immigration solicitors, campaigners, potential employers, and academics.
On the day, we will learn together about:
- the employment rights, and barriers to employment, for people in the asylum system in the UK;
- what the impacts of this policy are (social, economic, political, individual);
- why a near ban on working was introduced by politicians;
- what the opportunities for bringing change might be.
The event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. Please register for free at the link. We need to know the number of people in advance as we will provide lunch.
