Tuesday 3 September “UNITY over DIVISION” open public meeting

7pm, @ United Reform Church, Norfolk Street.

Organised by Sheffield TUC

The recent far right, racist riots that have taken place across the UK have demonstrated the threat posed by the far right to unity & safety in our communities. Right here, in South Yorkshire we have seen a horrific racist attack on a hotel used to house asylum seekers in Manvers, Rotherham, where rioters attempted to set fire to the hotel.

Sheffield TUC strongly believes that 14 years of Tory austerity, which has decimated services and destroyed the living standards of the working class, has created fertile ground for the far right, who dishonestly scapegoat refugees & migrants for the deprivation in our communities. We recognise the vile role played in whipping up racism by the likes of Nigel Farage & Reform, who are now represented in Parliament. But we also recognise that the conditions that allow the racists & fascists to recruit & spread division have been created by successive Labour & Tory governments.

The only way to defeat the racists & fascists in the long term is to combine our opposition to them in the streets, with building a movement to demand the things our communities need – good quality council & social housing, a fully funded & publicly owned NHS, free high quality education, & decent pay, terms & conditions for all workers. The far right feeds off the despair that is felt in our communities. We believe that trade unions are uniquely placed to assist in building this movement.

Following an emergency proposal put to the Executive committee by two ASLEF branches, Sheffield TUC is calling an open meeting on Tuesday 3rd September, 7pm at the Central United Reform Church. We intend at this meeting to form a coordinating committee, in order to bring together anti-racist groups, migrant & refugee rights groups, community organisations & trade unions. We believe that this committee can play an important coordinating role, both in terms of opposing racism & fascism on the streets, but also by building anti-racist & working class struggle in our workplaces & communities. Please come to our meeting to discuss our proposals.

Wednesday September 4th “Flying High for Palestine” Hot air balloon launch

5 pm to 6.30 pm, Norfolk Park’s Event Bowl.

Dramatic balloon flight over Sheffield trailing large Palestine flag in solidarity with Gaza

Sponsored by SPaCE, a Sheffield charity supporting children in Palestine

Please donate by clicking this link: https://bit.ly/49WFeYV?r=qr

The balloon will carry one passenger, Sahaar Awadallah, who is a Palestinian refugee from Gaza and a doctor living in Rotherham. The event will be a dramatic visual reminder to the people of Sheffield of the horrific plight of my people in Gaza, and the UK Government’s complicity in genocide. They have suffered the most intensive and destructive aerial bombardment anywhere in the world, with nearly 35,000 killed mostly women and children. Most of Gaza has been destroyed – there is no health care, no education, most of the housing has been destroyed and 1.8M displaced families are barely surviving in makeshift tents in Rafah. Over 2 million Palestinians face starvation, disease and ultimately imminent mass deaths through famine. We have to stand up and say NO to this.

Saturday 7th September National March for Palestine

Thursday 26th September ‘The Lions of Rotherham’.

7:30pm Wortley Hall

This is a play about the brave men who went out to Spain to fight alongside the democratically elected Republic against Francos forces.

THE FIGHT against fascism in the 1930s was the defining battle which shaped the

lives of a generation of working-class men from towns like Rotherham.

The Spanish Civil War was one of the pivotal events of the 20th century, as historians have

noted, for some a rehearsal for the Second World War, for others the last great cause.

As George Orwell’s memoir Homage to Catalonia details, a revolution by Spanish workers

and peasants rising up against a fascist coup in July 1936 inspired thousands from around

the world to fight in the International Brigades. Four men related to Rotherham who fought on the side of the democratically-elected Republic against the forces of fascist dictator General Franco, are vividly brought to life in a stunning new production telling their incredible stories.

Masses of research from a year-long project has been drawn together so as to intertwine the

men’s lives, with different time lines, to reveal their backgrounds, and experiences.

Running to just one hour 15 minutes, it is both evocative of a world of poverty and equality

from more than 80 years ago, and a provocative call to arms to stand and fight for peace and

justice.

Cost is £25 and includes pie and peas prior to the play.  To book, please contact reception on 0114 2882100

Why not stay the night?
