Sunday 27th April Festival of Debate “Imagining a World Without Fossil Fuels”

2pm-4pm Soft Ground, 37-41 The Moor S1 4PF. Stop Rosebank Sheffield is hosting a workshop focusing on the urgent need to abandon fossil fuels and transition to a greener, cleaner and more sustainable economy. The workshop will begin with a chaired conversation between climate activists who are campaigning to end our dependence on fossil fuels. Based on their research and experience, they will outline the practical steps necessary to create this systemic shift and how we can work together to bring it about.

After this chaired conversation, the session will move on to a community discussion between attendees. This discussion will encourage people to imagine a world without fossil fuels and consider the role they can play in forging a just transition to this new society. The event is aimed at experienced activists as well as those who are totally new to the climate movement. Book your free place at: festivalofdebate.com/2025/imagining-a-world-without-fossil-fuels

Monday 28th April     International Workers Memorial Day

1230hrs by the Memorial Tree outside Sheffield Town Hall, Pinstone Street.

Sheffield TUC will hold a wreath laying ceremony with speeches outside Sheffield Town Hall by the Memorial Tree. Branches and other organisation are invited to lay a wreath. This is an international trade union event to mark the importance of health and safety at work. The TUC says “Every year more people are killed at work than in wars. Most don’t die of mystery ailments, or in tragic “accidents”. They die because an employer decided their safety just wasn’t that important a priority.

International Workers Memorial Day (IWMD) 28 April commemorates those workers.”

It’s a time for us to come together as a movement and as a community. To remember those who have lost their lives to work, and renew our commitment to fight for the living and make work safe. Remember the Dead – Fight for the Living!

Tuesday 29th April    Jason Hickel: Degrowth – a 21st Century Revolution

World-leading political economist Jason Hickel will present a compelling strategy for the democratic transformation of society. Our current obsession with limitless growth drives ecological breakdown, yet our leaders insist it is the only way to create social benefits. Jason will debunk these myths, outline the limits of “green growth”, expose the costs to the Global South, and put forward policies that provide a good standard of living for everyone on the planet while keeping us within our planetary boundaries.

The conversation will be chaired by Nick Dearden, director of Global Justice Now, and we will discuss a plan for an eco-socialist future: keeping resource use within earth’s ecological limits, using technology that benefits people rather than profit, and through politics that enhances community wellbeing.
