Tuesday 6th March Sheffield Needs a Pay Rise Steering Committee
6pm till 7pm Room 3 United Reform Chapel. Norfolk Street. Join us this month to plan mapping, community pickets and socials. Sheffield TUC’s ground-breaking campaign is attracting a lot of interest but we need many more helpers and volunteers to make this campaign a success.

Wednesday 7th March Stand Up to Racism Public Meeting
7pm United Reform Chapel, Norfolk Street (opposite Crucible theatre). Speakers include Ian Hodson (President BFAWU); Janet Alder (Justice for Christopher Alder campaign); Magid Magid (Green Party Cllr and deputy Lord Mayor Sheffield); and Nadia Jama (BAME officer Sheffield Central CLP) SUtR flyer attached.

 

 

Thursday 8th March UCU University of Sheffield strike
YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN THE PICKET LINE AT JESSOPS WEST (University Roundabout near the tram stop) from 08.30 ONWARDS This week UCU members are on 4 days strike Monday 5, Tuesday 6, Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 March
UCU strikers will be celebrating International Women’s Day with a march on Thursday. Assemble at midday on Thursday at the Arts Tower. Working conditions are a feminist issue: pensions, gender pay gap, sexual harassment and more. March with us!

Saturday 10th March International Women’s Day event
10am till 1pm Quaker Meeting House, St James Street Sheffield. Short speeches, plus singers and dancers. Organised by Sheffield Hallam and Stocksbridge Labour Parties, plus the Sheffield Co-operative Party. Eleanor Midgeley, Women’s Officer for Sheffield Hallam CLP, has tickets for the event, if your members wish to order some.

Saturday 10th March Accountable Care Systems education event for Labour Party members and supporters. 2pm til 4pm at Trades and Labour Club, 200 Duke Street Sheffield S2 5QQ. Find out the truth about what’s happening to our NHS – from the experts on the inside.

Saturday 10th March “Jobs and Climate: Planning for a future that doesn’t cost the earth”
Hamilton House, Mabledon Place, London WCH 9BD tickets available from Eventbrite now This conference, organised by the Campaign against Climate Change Trade Union Group, aims to challenge the false choice of good jobs versus the environment. There is both an urgent need for action on climate change and a real opportunity for trade unionists to be at the forefront of campaigning for a transition.
Sessions include:
– Jobs and Climate: Challenging a false choice
– What is happening to our planet and why this is a trade union issue
– Planning for a National Climate Service today
– Climate and Women: Women on the frontline
– Environmental Reps: campaigning for change in the workplace
– Food and Agriculture – is a sustainable food system possible?
– Climate Refugees: Understanding the issues for the trade union – movement
– Planning for Just Transition – taking inspiration from the past and present
Workshops will also be led by key trade union and environmental campaigns: The Greener Jobs Alliance, Trade Unions for Energy Democracy and The Lucas Plan

Monday 26th March South Yorkshire Freedom Riders 4th Anniversary Rally
Assemble midday outside Sheffield train station. Barnsley contingent arriving by train with a view to start the rally about 12.15pm. The South Yorkshire Freedom Riders fought back and won against cuts in subsidies for concessionary bus and train fares – yet faced criminalisation for their efforts. We will not forget! Bring your banners!

Saturday 14th April 2018 March to Defend Our NHS in Leeds,
Assemble 11.30 outside Leeds Art Gallery, The Headrow LS1 3AA. March and rally organised by Leeds Keep Our NHS Public & Yorkshire Health Campaigns Together. Speakers include Karen Lee, Labour MP from Lincoln, nurse by profession and Shadow Minister for Fire; and Colin Hutchinson from Calderdale who is Chair of Doctors for the NHS and party to one of the two national Judicial Reviews trying to stop the implementation of Accountable Care Organisations. Saturday 28th April International Workers Memorial Day
1230hrs till 1330hrs by the memorial tree outside Sheffield Town hall on Pinstone Street. Speakers and a minute’s silence to Remember the Dead and Fight for the Living. A world-wide trade union health and safety event recognising the vital work done by trade unions in protecting people at work – and fighting for essential legal rights. All welcome. Bring your banners. Branches are invited to lay a wreath by the Memorial Tree.

Saturday 28th April Sheffield Socialist Choir- Singing for Change Workshop, Sheffield
10 am – 4pm Weston Park Museum. Sheffield Socialist Choir will be 30 this year and as part of our celebrations we are organising a day workshop designed to complement the exhibition “Changing Lives: 200 years of People and Protest in Sheffield”. Our Musical Director, Janet Wood will teach us easy to learn songs relating to change past and present. We will close the day by singing inside and outside the Museum. 34th year commemoration of the 18/6/1984. 1pm start, meeting on the spare land as previously on Orgreave Lane. All are welcome and please bring banners, placards etc and spread the word.
