Monday 23rd January “I, Daniel Blake” Ken Loach film showing provided by Sheffield TUC 7pm Trades and Labour Club, 200 Duke Street Sheffield S2 5QQ. Entrance free but donation of £2 welcome to cover cost. The award winning film by Ken Loach. Daniel Blake (59) has worked as a joiner most of his life. Now, for the first time ever, he needs help from the State. A deeply moving, starkly realistic story of a man thrust into the benefits system after suffering a heart attack. Doors open 6.30pm. Tuesday 24th January, Sheffield Trade Union Council delegate meeting
7pm Trades and Labour Club, 200 Duke Street Sheffield S2 5QQ (please use side entrance eon Talbot St). Guest speaker: Tony Burke UNITE AGS on BREXIT and the Trade Unions. (Copies of UNITE’s briefing paper will be available at the meeting). Visitors are welcome.
Thursday January 26 Public meeting “We Touched the Sky” Joint SYMAAG/Sheffield Chilean Community event 7-8.30pm (doors open at 6.30 for pre-meeting refreshments), Quaker Meeting House, 10 St James’ St, Sheffield S1 2EW. Learn about the experience of Chilean refugees who came to Sheffield. Main speaker is Dr Jasmine Gideon, senior lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London who has researched the health and well-being of Chilean refugee women in the UK. Also speakers from the Chilean community in Sheffield and a representative from the Sheffield labour movement who supported Chilean refugees in the 1970s. (The meeting is free though we’d welcome a donation to cover room-hire costs. Don’t let lack of money be a barrier to attending any SYMAAG events. Bring your ticket/receipt to the meeting and we can reimburse you in cash at the meeting for any reasonable travel expenses).

Tuesday 7th February Stand up To Racism! Public Meeting
7pm Central United Reformed Church, Norfolk St, Sheffield Following BREXIT and recent comments in the media, racism and the right to Freedom of Movement is permeating every aspect of political debate. Meanwhile the PREVENT strategy continues to demonise Muslims in public institutions across the country. Sheffield Stand Up To Racism is having a public meeting to defend Freedom of Movement, discuss a strategy for challenging PREVENT in Sheffield, and raise awareness of the campaign so that we can build the fight back.
Saturday 25th/Sunday 26th February Friends of Edward Carpenter weekend
The FOEC are celebrating LGBT+ History Month and Marking and Celebrating the Partial Decriminalisation of Homosexuality in Britain in 1967. Saturday 4th March “It’s Our NHS” Rally and demonstration London
Organised by Peoples Assembly. Depart Tavistock Square 12 noon. The NHS had to call in the Red Cross over New Year due to the “humanitarian crisis”. The government’s chronic underfunding of the NHS threatens to destroy the service and could lead to further privatisation. If you’re angry at the state of the NHS join us and campaigners across the country on a march for the NHS to Parliament on Saturday 4th March. Saturday 18 March 2017 Stand Up To Racism National Demonstration London Stand Up To Racism has called a national demonstration to coincide with the UN Anti-Racism Day. Transport from Sheffield will be available (details to be confirmed). Please email for more information. Over 50 MPs, Peers, trade unionists and Jewish and Muslim leaders have joined together in backing a ‘Stand Up to Trump Stand Up to Racism’ demonstration. The Statement is backed by Doreen Lawrence, Rabbi Lee Wax and members of The Muslim Council of Britain and is supported by Shadow Cabinet Members Diane Abbott, Emily Thornberry, Clive Lewis as well as leading backbenchers Chuka Umunna, Lisa Nandy, Bill Morris, Neil Kinnock and Peter Hain and trade union leaders including the National Union of Teachers Kevin Courtney and Unite’s Len McCluskey.
