Friday 23rd November “Migrants are Welcome in Sheffield” Rally 5pm outside Sheffield Town Hall, Pinstone Street. In response to the government’s increasing rhetoric about “taking control of our borders”, “queue jumpers” and ending freedom of movement, South Yorkshire Migrant and Asylum Action Group (SYMAAG), Another Europe, and others, are holding a rally at 5pm-7:30pm outside the Town Hall with the slogans: “Don’t Scrap Freedom of Movement” and “Migrants are welcome in Sheffield”. Sheffield TUC is supporting this event and urges trade unionists and their union branches to take part. Please bring trade union banners. See flyer attached

Saturday 24th November Support RMT Northern Rail strike – leafleting outside station
10am start outside Sheffield Rail Station. RMT members are continuing their strike to keep guards on the train on Northern Rail with strikes every Saturday in the run up to Christmas. They need out support. Heeley Labour Party have organised this event and Louise Haigh MP is attending along with Heeley CLP banner

12pm at 18-22 Union Street, Sheffield S1 2JP. ACORN moves into NatWest!
“NatWest recently made headlines for forcing landlords to evict tenants on benefits. This is unacceptable! It denies housing to people on low incomes, contributing to homelessness and insecure housing. Since NatWest is leaving people with nowhere to live, we are moving in to NatWest and turning their bank branch into our new home. Come along and help us move in! We want a housing system that provides homes for everyone and not profits for big banks. Meet ACORN Sheffield this Saturday to demand NatWest stops discriminating against people on benefits.” Organised by ACORN

Postponed; Saturday 24th November Children’s’ Healing Centre in Gaza public meeting and video A meeting planned by Sheffield Palestine Solidarity Campaign to celebrate the opening of the “Never Stop Dreaming” Children’s Healing centre in Gaza was to take place at Sheffield UMIX Centre. Mon 26th and Tues 27th November. 2-day training session for a Just Transition to a low carbon economy. Venue: PCS, Town Centre House, Merrion Centre LS2 8LY Two-day course provided by Yorks and Humber TUC as part of its work on a Regional Low Carbon Strategy. Yorkshire and Humber is home to heavy carbon emission-producing industries employing thousands of trade union members on good pay. We need to protect those jobs, but not by sticking our head in the sand and ignoring climate change! The course is FREE, drinks provided, bring own lunch.
Key industrial unions are speaking up about working for a Just Transition: “Trade unions are first and foremost about jobs – let’s not have a replay of the times when we were not asked, or refused, to get involved.” Bill Adams, Regional Secretary, TUC Yorkshire and Humber. Monday 26th November Book discussion ‘Welcome to Sheffield’
6.30-8.30 The Sanctuary, 37-39 Chapel Walk Sheffield. Local author and founder member of SYMAAG David Price will talk about his latest book, “Welcome to Sheffield – A Migration History”. A finger buffet will be provided. This is a free event, but donations will be most welcome. Copies (signed if desired) of the book will be on sale @£12 each.

Please come and show your respect for Bill Ronksley- trade unionist, communist and internationalist – who served as Sheffield TUC Secretary for nearly 30 years. Aged 94 and in failing health, he passed away this month. Minutes silence and tributes

UK trade unionists have visited Norway and come back impressed with this successful initiative that involves young trade unionists visiting workplaces on fact finding missions to find out what workers think about their conditions – and introduce them to trade union ideas….
Abdul Shaiff, Yemeni Community in Sheffield. An appalling humanitarian disaster is unfolding in Yemen as a result of the aerial bombardment unleashed by Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf States with the backing of UK and USA. We also will debate an emergency motion calling for an immediate ceasefire in Yemen
We will also report on the fantastic progress made in fundraising for a Sheffield Union Organiser. As we near our £10,000 initial target, we are getting closer to making a real breakthrough in our Sheffield Needs a Pay Rise Campaign. Affiliated Trade Union Branch delegates may vote. However, trade union members who are not delegates are welcome as visitors. Labour Party TU Liaison Officers especially welcome.

Saturday 1st December UNITE Community Day of Action against Universal Credit
11am till 1pm Unite Community have decided to have a stall on the Moor and to leaflet/petition the public as part of raising awareness now that UC has started to be rolled out in Sheffield. Please join us.

Tuesday 4th December Stop the War public meeting “Stop Bombing Yemen”
7.30pm United Reform Church, 60 Norfolk Street S1 2JB. Speakers to be confirmed. Stop the bombing of Yemen! Stop arming Saudi Arabia!

Wedneday 5th December Funeral for Bill Ronksley
12 midday at Grenoside crematorium, north Sheffield. The funeral cortege will leave Wortley Hall at 1130am. Return to Wortley hall at 2pm for wake. Expect a big turnout from his union ASLEF of which he was National President for many years, and from many trade unionists and friends around Sheffield who admired and respected him.

Saturday 15th December Solidarity Rally for RMT strikers
RMT members are striking solidly to keep guards on the train at northern Rail. Almost every other private rail franchise has now made agreement with RMT. We need to show public solidarity and support for RMT members fighting for our – and their – rail safety. Details of time and venue not confirmed at this stage.
