Dear Colleagues, Brothers and Sisters,
We invite you to affiliate to Sheffield Trade Union Council for 2018. We are a vital player in Sheffield’s Trade Union and Labour Movement, offering solidarity to union branches in dispute and playing an important leadership and coordination role on behalf of trade unions and their members in all areas of Sheffield’s economy, in both private and public sectors (including the voluntary and community sectors).
29 union branches affiliated to us in 2017 and we hope to attract even more branches to us in 2018. Unions affiliated to us include ASLEF, CWU, EQUITY, FBU, GMB, NUJ, NUT, PCS, PROSPECT, RMT, TSSA, UCU, UNISON, UNITE and USDAW
Throughout 2017 we have assisted and supported unions in their disputes and campaigns e.g.
• protest action against the Tories attacks on trade union rights
• Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign
• “Action for Rail” re privatisation, and high fares
• Support for PCS Eastern Avenue Job Centre dispute, RMT driver only trains dispute, NUT Westfields School strike, BFAWU MacDonalds etc.
• Supporting unions in their pay bargaining campaigns (FBU, UNISON, GMB etc.)
Our “Sheffield NEEDS a Pay Rise!” campaign has drawn support from well beyond our normal trade union base. With your support this will be a major campaign activity in 2018. Donations are very welcome. (Please make cheques payable to Sheffield Trade Union Council but clearly marked on the back “Sheffield Needs a Pay Rise”)
We have supported or led a number of campaigns against austerity spending cuts to our vital public services, working with Sheffield Peoples Assembly, UNITE Community Branch and a number of local campaigning groups. We have been an important voice speaking out in the local media not only against cuts but for a positive alternative and a fairer society.
We have supported UAF and Stand Up to Racism in their fight against racism and fascism. This included standing behind the Rotherham 12, support for refugees and adopting a strong position opposed to PREVENT the Government’s anti-terrorist strategy in schools and colleges.
We have rebuilt our links with the Sheffield City Council Labour Leadership with a new regular dialogue on a quarterly basis.
We have secured a number of high profile national speakers to our monthly delegate meetings throughout 2017 on important topics. Mick Cash General Secretary of RMT addressed our AGM. Over the year we have had speakers from South Yorks Asbestos Support group (SARAG); Palestine Solidarity Campaign; Russian Revolution Centenary Committee; Mosborough Against Fracking; UNITE Education; AFC Unity Football, RMT Sheffield strikers; UAF and Stand Up to Racism; UNITE’s response to BREXIT and more
We are delighted to announce that our speaker at the forthcoming AGM on 27th February 2018 will be Roger McKenzie AGS UNISON
Sheffield Trade Union Council’s public communications face includes a website, a Facebook page and a stream of press releases which have got us noticed on Radio Sheffield, the Sheffield Star and beyond, ensuring the voice of Sheffield’s trade unions and their members is heard.
We look forward to you joining us in 2018
Martin Mayer (UNITE) Bob Jeffery (UCU)
