Dear Colleagues, Brothers and Sisters,

We invite you to affiliate to Sheffield Trade Union Council for 2017. We are a vital player in Sheffield’s Trade Union and Labour Movement, offering solidarity to union branches in dispute and playing an important leadership and coordination role on behalf of trade unions and their members in all areas of Sheffield’s economy, in both private and public sectors (including the voluntary and community sectors).

Last year we increased the number of branches affiliating to us from 32 to 35 branches and we hope to attract even more branches to us in 2017. Unions affiliated to us include ASLEF, CWU, EQUITY, FBU, GMB, NAPO, NUJ, NUT, PCS, PROSPECT; RMT, SPAG, TSSA, UCATT, UCU, UNISON, UNITE and USDAW

Throughout 2016 we have assisted and supported unions in their disputes and campaigns e.g.

  • protest action against the Tories attacks on trade union rights
  • Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign
  • “Action for Rail” re privatisation, and high fares
  • Support for Junior Doctors (BMA), GMB Veolia dispute, Pennine Foods BFAWU dispute and more
  • protesting Sheffield job cuts in our “Northern Powerhouse or Northern Poorhouse?” Campaign

This Autumn we launched our “Sheffield NEEDS a Pay Rise!” campaign which has drawn in support from well beyond our normal trade union base. We attracted an audience of 250 people to our launch meeting with John McDonnell MP and drew several hundred to our city centre demonstration on 17th December. With your support this will be a major campaign activity in 2017.

We have supported or led a number of campaigns against austerity spending cuts to our vital public services, working with Sheffield Peoples Assembly, UNITE Community Branch and a number of local campaigning groups. We have been an important voice speaking out in the local media not only against cuts but for a positive alternative and a fairer society. We have supported UAF and Stand Up to Racism in their fight against racism and fascism. This included standing behind the Rotherham 12 , support for refugees and adopting a strong position opposed to PREVENT the Government’s anti-terrorist strategy in schools and colleges.

We have rebuilt our links with the Sheffield City Council Labour Leadership with a new regular dialogue on a quarterly basis.

We have secured a number of high profile national speakers to our monthly delegate meetings throughout 2016 on important topics. In February 2016 Steve Gillan General Secretary of prison Officers Association (POA) addressed our AGM. Over the year we have had speakers from Sheffield Rape Crisis; Hillsborough 96 Campaign; Save Our NHS; Shrewsbury Pickets; Rotherham 12; GMB Veolia dispute; plus speakers on Devolution , PREVENT, OTJC and we hosted a public debate on the EU Referendum

Our speaker for January is Tony Burke UNITE AGS on the trade union response to BREXIT. We are delighted to announce that our speaker at the forthcoming AGM on 28th February 2017 will be Mick Cash RMT General Secretary.

Sheffield Trade Union Council’s public communications face includes a website, a FaceBook page and a stream of press releases which have got us noticed on Radio Sheffield, the Sheffield Star and beyond, ensuring the voice of Sheffield’s trade unions and their members is heard. We look forward to you joining us in 2017

Yours sincerely

Martin Mayer Secretary (UNITE)                                                                              Bob Jeffery President (UCU)
